RoHS Exemption 7b Set to Expire; You Can Help Ensure Renewal

Exemption 7b under the EU RoHS Directive will expire in July 2016 unless a renewal is granted. Requests for renewal of Exemption 7b must be submitted by January 2015. Renewal requests require technical information, including reliability data that proves the need for an exemption to continue.

Lead solders that meet the criteria in Exemption 7b are currently exempt from the RoHS Directive. Exemption 7b states, “Lead in solders for servers, storage and storage array systems, network infrastructure equipment for switching, signaling, transmission as well as network management for telecommunications.” This exemption cannot be claimed after July 2016 if a renewal is not pursued and granted.

If your company requires an extension to RoHS Exemption 7b and is interested in pursuing a renewal request, please contact Erin Sahinci, director, component engineering, Ciena Corp. at ESahinci@ciena.com.

Not a comment, but a question: Is there any grace period after June 2016 during which parts/boards carrying the 7b exemption can still be shipped into the EU?
