Foresite’s Terry Munson Presents at Lead Free Risk Management (PERM) Council Meeting

The Lead Free Risk Management (PERM) Council Meeting is taking place February 10-13, 2014, at NASA Kennedy Space Center, Fla. The following is a highlight from Tuesday, February 11:

Terry Munson, Foresite Inc., presented on the development of a “Qualification Plan for All Lead Free Manufacturing Processes for BMDS Interceptor Product Lines.”  Foresite is helping customers look beyond the commercial lead-free applications and is examining the impacts of lead-free manufacturing for high reliability applications for use in missile defense applications.  This program focuses on development of a test assembly, named Quad 4 Assembly that helps examine tin whiskers and corrosion susceptibility for high reliability applications.  Foresite is evaluating interactions which occur between the stack up of combinations of materials in lead-free assemblies.  For benchmarking purposes, a control set of leaded assemblies are being built as well.  All manufacturing processes are being evaluated including surface mount, selective soldering, wave and hand soldering operations.  Temperature cycling, thermal shock, SIR, vibration, CAF testing at elevated temperature and humidity, functional testing of hardware, and tin whisker evaluation at two elevated temperature and humidity conditions.  Foresite expects to be completed with the phase one investigation by end of 2014.  For more information, contact Munson at Terrym@residues.com.
