Working Together, Again!

By John Mitchell, IPC President

With all of the exciting things happening in the industry and at IPC, I had a lot of options for this month’s message. That being said, the recent news that SMTA and IPC will co-locate our fall events — IPC committee meetings with SMTA International’s exhibition and conference — is one that represents a lot to me personally.

It was my pleasure to meet with (now) SMTA President Bill Barthel and Executive Director JoAnn Stromberg in September to discuss how IPC and SMTA might work together to better serve the electronics industry. One of the first items that came up was feedback from IPC and SMTA members about the difficulty in attending or exhibiting at two events in the fall.  We were able to work quickly and gain approval from our respective Boards to make collocation a reality for 2013 and beyond.

IPC will not hold IPC Midwest in 2013. Instead, IPC committees will meet at SMTA International in 2013. After that, we will collaborate on a joint fall event in 2014 and beyond. This should give a boost to the separate events and make them greater than what they are on their own. A single fall event will allow the attendees and exhibitors to come together to solve industry issues and to find solutions for their own challenges more meaningfully and more cost-effectively.

As the relatively new president of IPC, I wondered how the announcement would be received. Immediately following the announcement at SMTA International, I was approached by many in attendance with their words of excitement and encouragement. Hearing things like “we were all smiles and nods around the table saying to each other ‘this is the right thing’” and “this is a great thing for the industry” as well as “thank you; working together like this is needed in the industry” from those in attendance immediately alleviated any concerns about the reception of the news.

IPC exists to benefit our members. We must constantly look for new ways to accomplish this. I believe collaborations like this will only move the industry in a positive direction. I am grateful to SMTA for their willingness to work with us to achieve a common goal.

As always, I welcome your comments at johnmitchell@ipc.org.

Congratulations to Bill Barthel, JoAnn Stromberg and John Mitchel for re-instituting cooperative efforts for the fall U.S. events of the SMTA and the IPC. The membersd of both groups and in the industry will benefit from their forsightedness.
In hope that they will restart a similar venture recently attempted between the two groups’ members in the Hong Kong-South China region and stand ready to help accomplish this.

Accolades to both committees for partnering a fall event in 2013 and going forward. Our staff attends IPC Committee meetings and also has a booth each year at SMTAI. It will be great having our entire team together in one location! What a great idea!!—Thank you, Blackfox Training Institute
