Olympian committee members

Streaming the Olympics while I should be working is very cool. I always enjoy the sense of friendship and festivity that shows up every four years, when athletes compete yet usually seem to truly enjoy the chance to be amongst the best people in their fields.

In one of those moments when the it feels like the universe is telling you something, I recently interrupted my daytime Olympic viewing for a business call. Which was OK, because the event had finished and the winners and losers were giving each other congratulatory hugs.

The call drifted into the upcoming IPC Midwest Conference and Exhibition. My caller started discussing his plans for the conference. Then he said something that I’ve heard from a lot of IPC members.

“I’m going to be in some committee meetings. They’re always good places to learn because I sit with experts from all aspects of the industry.”

It struck me that the spirit of camaraderie and fair play that pervades the Olympics is alive and well when IPC members gather. There’s often a genuine feeling of respect for others based on their inputs and work on standards and documents.

IPC committee meetings might not get the TV ratings of the Olympics, but they’re also places where competitors can learn from each other. Thankfully, I don’t have to worry competition between the Olympics and IPC Midwest. The torch will be out well before the conference opens Aug. 22.

As a “Games Maker” at the Olympics, that’s me in the red and purple outfits, I have to agree with Terry. The experience of being in the Olympics and sitting in on committee meetings are both fun and rewarding in their own way. It would be nice to go to Rio in four years’ time. Can IPC arrange a conference in Rio in four years time??
