Making sense of the world (market)

With all the stock market uncertainty in August, it’s a good time to take a breath and see what’s really going on.  Stock traders react wildly to the news tidbit of the day, but businesses have to do their planning for far longer timeframes.

IPC is providing some help with an in-depth analysis of the printed circuit board industry. The IPC World PCB Production Report for the Year 2010 provides 30+ pages of facts, figures and commentary on the global market. This in-depth report looks at a range of technologies including flexible boards, high density interconnects and metal clad boards, to name a few. Flex had the fastest growth, by the way.

The huge role of Asian manufacturers gets plenty of observation. Wages in China are rising at a rate that might alter their pricing differential.

Vietnam and the Philippines are both growing rapidly. There’s a chance that they could take share away from China in the way the Chinese have lured manufacturing volumes away from Japan and Taiwan.

The full report is now available through the IPC Bookstore. There’s plenty of solid information in the report with contributions from the industry’s leading researchers.
