Standards on IPC TechNet Forum

We all know the IPC standards development committee meetings at events such as IPC APEX EXPO are interactive, engaging and sometimes full of lively discussion. IPC committee members discuss test results, implementation and opinions on what each standard should include.

The conversations continue throughout the year in many forms, including the IPC TechNet community.

Here’s a quick look at some of the conversations happening there now that you should be a part of:

-Conformal coating, encapsulation and potting. IPC member Doug Pauls posed a few questions to his fellow members:
1. What would you consider to be a definition of “potting” and a
definition of “encapsulation”?
2. Are there standard definitions for these somewhere? They don’t exist
in IPC as far as I know.
3. What would you consider to be the boundary between conformal coating
and “potting or encapsulation”? I have my own opinions but want to hear
yours.
4. In what class would you consider an underfill to be in?

-Bev Christian wrote up a “Underfill Workmanship Pass/fail Criteria Proposal” in IPC-A-610 format for Class 2 and Class 3. He hopes to present an initial draft to IPC with comments from the TechNet community.

Other technical issues are also raised in the forum. If you have a standards-related question, have a technical issue you need feedback on or just want to connect with peers more regularly, be sure to visit the IPC TechNet forum.
