One stop research shop on tin whiskers

Tin whiskers is a concern throughout the industry. Rockwell Collins’ Dave Hillman and Doug Pauls, two of IPC’s standards committee chairmen, put together WP-009, a white paper reference and analysis of 12 papers from industry and defense agencies on tin whiskers. Their conclusions:

1. The electronics industry considers conformal coating as an industry Best Practice tin whisker mitigation protocol.

2. The conformal coating captures and contains whisker, however, it does not inhibit or stop whiskering.

3. Many aerospace companies consider conformal coating as one acceptable tin whisker mitigation strategy and is often employed as one risk mitigation strategy incorporated into a systems risk mitigation approach.

The paper is available in the IPC bookstore for $15 for IPC members and $30 for nonmembers through this link.
